Erik Juno - Birch Pollen Nova (2024)

Styles: Cloud Rap, Art Rap | SE

I was recommended this album by Stillbeaches a few weeks ago. It struck me as a very underrated tape from a small artist. All of it self-produced by Erik Juno himself.

Ceramicks opens with a dreamy beat transitioning into a solid verse from Erik. This tape, especially in production feels quite Yabujin influenced. It's also very influenced by Vaporwave while staying rooted in Trap production, making for an enjoyable sound. It's otherworldly but accessible, staying varied throughout the whole tape.
Juno is a fun rapper, his flows are bouncy and the lyrics are playfully nonsensical. Terrraria is a prime example of this - with him rapping about his musical skills, Mario Kart and a bunch of other things.
This album's track sequencing is unexpectedly satisfying, keeping a rhythm of ambience followed by a hard-hitting Rap song. Inside is a great example of this, having maybe the best verse on the tape followed by a strange instrumental bit. The tracklist is succinct but fun.

Birch Pollen Nova is a strange, short journey into a very foreign atmosphere. Erik Juno often wears his influences on his sleeve but nevertheless maintaining his own personal style. It's been two years since this tape, I hope it's not his last.

7.5/10
