Biobreaks is one of the many aliases used by German DJ Martin Damm, this being the debut EP under the name. It's comprised of four extended tracks stretched to about 20 minutes.
Move serves as an energetic opener, being a hybrid of Ragga Jungle complete with a Jamaican vocal sample and some crunchy Breakbeat Hardcore. This is a consistently relentless release, never letting up with its intensity but staying light-hearted throughout. It's dense with hard synths, melodies and samples leading to an almost claustrophobic listening experience. At times it feels like proto-Breakcore, coming shortly after the classic Alec Empire EPs a year before.
What Is That Name? is the most industrial track here, the bass being especially present along with the choir sample that's repeated a few times during it really making it a chaotic song. It could be split into a few movements with how layered it gets but stays smooth throughout always keeping the intensity. The breaks on this record in general are so satisfying, giving each track an insatiable vigor.
Fat Girls shows much more restraint than previous songs, being a more atmospheric one although still sample-focused with solid production. It's a good change of pace, leading into the similar but better outro track.
Phenomena is an again relaxed, more futuristic-sounding cut with the best bass of this whole release. The distant samples vibrate in the background while the main show are the synths and bass.
The difference between the A and B side of this is substantial, definitely an intentional choice to make it more varied while keeping the pacing consistent. I prefer the first side for its anarchic nature but you really can't go wrong with either. It's an underrated example of the various genres it does, doing some of them very early.
