Nine Vicious has had a meteoric rise in the modern underground, eventually being signed by YSL (then dropped) and becoming one of the most successful rappers of the new wave this year. Along with that has come a lot of controversy around him as a person and more importantly his music.
Tumblr Music is one of the most boring Trap albums in recent memory, rivaled by other artists who are already past their prime and don't have anything to talk about. The difference is Nine Vicious is an up-and-coming artist with nothing to say. He has pretty loose flows on this album, just kind of going through the motions for a lot of it. Sometimes he'll try to do something more catchy like Anti You but he'll fall flat on his face. He's genuinely one of the least charismatic rappers in recent memory, ironic as he apes his style from much better rappers like Young Thug while dumbing down their style. So many of these songs just go nowhere, he does some adlibs and a mediocre verse and it just ends. This album just sounds very empty a lot of the time, not even the adlibs add some kind of flavor to the tracks. The production is pretty mediocre Trap, often very minimal with no memorable melodies or production quirks. It sounds quite synthetic and the occasional samples on songs don't alleviate just how generic it is.
Why is this album even called Tumblr Music? Nine Vicious in general draws influences and pays homage to so many people and ideas while not actually doing anything with them, coming off as severe laziness and a lack of creativity. Whenever I listen to this album, it feels like I'm listening to a D-tier YSL album from 2018. But it's from 2025 and by making this numbing music he actually managed to get signed by the label he's biting so much. It's a representation of almost everything wrong with modern rap, not just in the underground but the mainstream too. Lack of ideas, tired production, no rap skills to speak of and just a lack of effort.
4/10
